PROFESSIONAL SUMMARY

For the last several years I have taught, advised, mentored, recruited, advertised and essentially been the sole program lead of a nationally recognized high school journalism program. That is to say, I've successfully managed one of the most difficult juggling jobs that may exist outside of the medical field.

My constant tasks involved planning interactive and real-world lessons and assignments, grading projects, meeting with student leaders outside of regular class time, developing continued team building, organizing travel for conventions and camps, implementing an overnight staff retreat for yearbook and news magazine students, managing short and long-term projects, editing designs, editing copy, facilitating production for each publication, mentoring fellow teachers and co-workers, organizing larger all-school events, tracking finances, advertising yearbook sales and program highlights on social media, archiving and improving curriculum, driving vans for field trips, speaking at conferences, communicating with parents, communicating with clients and community partners, navigating student press law and prior review, organizing special events and banquets for the program, submitting works to journalism organizations for critiques and....*insert deep breath here*

I could go on and on. The daily life of teachers is a madhouse, and if you ever thought to yourself "Gosh, having summers off must be so nice," just remember that educators absolutely need  the break to continue doing what they do, and most teachers don't necessarily take all that time to really rest. I am lucky to have experienced the chaos and to have grown and learned so much.

I can count myself among the survivors and thrivers of the madhouse, but as my students might say - "Miss Val, it's time for you to enter a new era" - and I agree.

FREELANCE

The gig economy has become a huge part of U.S. working culture and I have subscribed to the freelancing market in varying intensities for as long as I've been able to work. Since I first gained access to cameras and software, I've explored my passions for digital art and my love of photography and film. I've done professional headshots, family shoots, weddings, special events and really anything that I can fit into my schedule or figure out how to do. I'm almost always available for the next big gig -- I love an excuse to whip out my camera or stay up late puzzling together an epic design.

JOURNALISM Teacher
and PROGRAM advisor

NOTRE DAME DE SION HIGH SCHOOL

As the journalism instructor and publications advisor at Notre Dame de Sion, I led a multi-platform, award-winning student media program as a one-person department. I taught students ages 14–18, adapting instruction across experience levels to develop foundational and advanced skills in journalism, design, and digital storytelling. I managed and mentored small editorial teams to write, edit, design, and publish a print newsmagazine, online news site, and a 232-page yearbook, while also building a pipeline of student talent through project-based coursework for underclassmen.

VIDEOGRAPHER

ZETA TAU ALPHA INTERNATIONAL OFFICE

My time working for ZTA was short but priceless in terms of experience and skills learned. Not only did I move - alone with my dog - from St. Louis to Indianapolis and begin a new adventure and solo career, but I found a collection of talented women working for a supremely branded and wholesome international non-profit. It's the first time I truly memorized the HEX code color of a brand. I spent my year traveling with piles of equipment, reporting on collegiate and alumnae chapters across the coasts, serving on committees in the office, exploring and getting certified in After Effects, animating, scriptwriting, editing and working with a five-woman communication department to get everything done exceptionally.

GRADUATE PROGRAM
PROFESSIONAL asSistant

Saint Louis University college of arts & sciences

While earning my masters degree at SLU, I was able to secure an assistantship position in the Web Development department in the College of Arts and Sciences. There, I did a variety of tasks for over 30 departments and programs. As a one-woman journalist, I found and followed stories from start to finish to create publishable web features as either written releases or video profiles. I was also tasked with improving the College's social media attention and engagement.

Previously, Facebook had been the primary focus of interest and Instagram had a total of 5 simple posts with only 50 followers. A post averaged at about 12 likes. I shifted focused to Instagram and developed a media calendar; by the end of my program we had over 400 followers and averaged about 60 likes. I left an evolved best- practices for future graduate assistants to follow
